Collection: Chesterfield Beds
A Chesterfield bed has a deep-buttoned headboard. The fabric is pulled into a grid of buttons, so the padding rises in diamonds between them. It's the most traditional look we make, and it works in period rooms and in plain modern ones where you want one heavy, textured piece.
Every bed here is upholstered to order in plush velvet or another fabric from our swatch range, in single, small double, double, king and super king. Some sit on a divan with drawers or a lift-up ottoman base, others on a standard frame, so check each listing for the base type.
Two practical points. Buttons collect dust in the creases, so run a soft brush attachment over the headboard every few weeks. And deep buttoning casts small shadows, which makes the finished headboard look a shade darker than a flat swatch. Order fabric swatches first if you're between two colours.
Questions people ask
How do I make a Chesterfield bed more comfortable?
Most of the comfort comes from the mattress, so choose a softer one such as the Pillow Top if the bed feels hard. To sit up against the buttoned headboard, a 54 inch headboard and a firm cushion or bolster in front of it make a big difference. Our step-by-step guide has more ideas.
Is a Chester bed the same as a Chesterfield bed?
Yes. Chester is the shortened name, and it means the same deep-buttoned style.
Can I get a Chesterfield bed with storage?
Yes. Several Chesterfield designs here are divans with drawers in the base, and some frames can go on an ottoman gas-lift base. The product page lists the base options for each bed.
Are Chesterfield beds old-fashioned?
The shape is traditional, but the fabric decides how it looks. In a plain modern velvet it suits a contemporary room. Read more in what is a Chesterfield bed?
