Most children move from a cot or toddler bed to a standard single bed, 90 x 190 cm (3ft x 6ft3), which lasts into the teenage years. If the room allows, a small double (120 x 190 cm, 4ft) gives an older child or teenager more space and suits sleepovers. A small single (75 x 190 cm) saves width but has fewer bedding options.

When should a child move to a single bed?
When they've outgrown the cot or toddler bed, or start climbing out of the cot. A single is long enough to last well into the teenage years, so it's rarely worth buying a toddler-sized bed in between unless the room is tiny.
Are upholstered beds safe for children?
They're a good choice, because there's no hard timber edge at head height. Our kids beds are padded across the whole headboard and side panels, built on the same hardwood frames as our adult beds. They come in Single (3ft) and Small Double (4ft), with Double (4ft6) on most designs.

Is an ottoman bed safe for a child's room?
It's great for toy and bedding storage, but an adult should open and close it. The gas struts lower the platform slowly, yet a closing lid can still catch fingers. For storage a child can use alone, a divan with drawers is simpler.
What fabric is best for a kids bed?
Plush velvet. It brushes clean, and spills blot out if you catch them quickly. Avoid looped fabrics like bouclé for young children; little fingers pull at the loops. Our velvet vs bouclé guide has more.
