UK beds come in five standard sizes: single 90 x 190 cm (3ft), small double 120 x 190 cm (4ft), double 135 x 190 cm (4ft6), king 150 x 200 cm (5ft) and super king 180 x 200 cm (6ft). Those are mattress measurements. The bed frame around the mattress is always a little larger, so measure the room against the frame, not the mattress.

How much bigger is a bed frame than the mattress?
On our upholstered frames, about 2 inches wider and 7 to 8 inches longer. The extra width is the padded side rails; the extra length is the headboard and footboard. Our Level Lines bed in king size, for example, takes up 62 x 86 inches of floor (157 x 218 cm) around a 150 x 200 cm mattress. Wingback designs can be wider again at the headboard, so check the product page for the design you like.
Which bed size gives two adults enough room?
Divide the width by two. A double gives each person 67.5 cm, which is less than a single mattress. A king gives 75 cm each. A super king gives 90 cm each, the same as sleeping on your own single. If one of you moves a lot at night, or a child or dog regularly joins you, the step from double to king makes a bigger difference than any mattress upgrade.

What size bed fits in a 10ft by 10ft bedroom?
A king fits comfortably. A 10ft room is about 305 cm each way. Our king frame is 157 cm wide, which leaves roughly 74 cm of walkway on each side, and 218 cm long, which leaves 87 cm at the foot. A super king (188 cm wide) leaves only 58 cm each side, which works if you don't need bedside tables. A useful rule is at least 60 cm of clear floor on any side you walk along. Are UK bed sizes the same as European or US sizes?
No. A UK double is 135 x 190 cm, while a European double is usually 140 x 200 cm and a US queen is about 152 x 203 cm. UK mattresses will not fit European frames properly, and the reverse is also true. Everything we make uses UK sizes, so UK mattresses and bedding fit without gaps.
Do storage beds need extra space?
Yes, and people forget this. An end-lift ottoman needs about 60 cm of clear floor at the foot so the platform can rise. A divan with drawers needs room at the side for the drawers to open. Measure for the bed plus the storage you'll open. Our divan vs ottoman guide covers the clearance for each.
