An end lift ottoman opens from the foot of the bed and hinges at the headboard end. A side lift ottoman opens from one long side and hinges along the other. Choose end lift when you have about 60 cm of clear floor at the foot. Choose side lift when the foot is against a wall or furniture, or the bed sits in an alcove.

How does a side lift ottoman work?
The same gas struts as an end lift, fitted across the width instead of the length. You lift from the long side, the platform tilts up towards the wall, and the struts hold it open. It suits rooms where the bed's foot is close to a wardrobe, a radiator or the door.
Which side should a side lift open from?
The side you can stand at with the bed in position. If the bed's left side is against the wall, the lift has to open from the right, and the hinge sits on the wall side. Decide this before ordering and check the options on the product page, or ask us if the side isn't listed.

Is a side lift good for a super king?
It works, but reaching the far side of a 180 cm wide base means leaning well in. On super kings and kings we usually suggest end lift if the foot is clear. On singles and small doubles, side lift is easy to use.

Do side lift ottomans hold as much as end lift?
Yes. The storage space is the same; only the direction of opening changes.
How much space do you need to open an ottoman bed?
An end lift needs about 60 cm clear at the foot. A side lift needs standing room along the opening side.
Can you open a side lift ottoman with a heavy mattress?
The gas struts take most of the weight. A very heavy mattress makes the lift slower; tell us if your mattress is unusually heavy.
Is a side opening ottoman good for a box room?
Often it's the only ottoman that works in a box room, because the foot of the bed is usually close to a wall.
Can I change an end lift to a side lift later?
No. The hinge and strut positions are built into the base, so choose the opening when you order.
