How do you measure for a tall headboard?
Measure from the floor to the lowest thing on the wall behind the bed: a window sill, radiator shelf, picture rail or light switch. A 60 inch headboard stands 152 cm from the floor, so it will cover most window sills. The 54 inch version clears more of them. Our tall headboards are floor-standing, so the height is measured from the floor, not from the top of the mattress.
Do tall headboards make a room look smaller?
Usually the reverse. In a room with a high ceiling, a short headboard leaves a wide band of bare wall that makes the bed look lost. A tall one draws the eye up. It only feels heavy in a small room with a low ceiling, where the 24 or 54 inch sizes suit better.

54 inch or taller, padded. You want the padding to reach the back of your head when sitting against pillows. A 24 inch headboard stops at about pillow height, so you'd be leaning on the wall.
