The trade-off is care: fabric needs vacuuming and spot cleaning rather than a wipe. How long it lasts depends on what's inside, so check for a hardwood frame and firmly fixed, deep padding.
What are the pros of an upholstered bed?
Comfort when you sit up, which a wooden or metal headboard can't match. No hard corners to bang shins on. Quiet, because padded joints don't creak the way metal ones can. And fabric choice: our upholstered frames come in plush velvet, Coniston, Naples and Galaxy fabrics in a wide colour range, plus teddy bouclé on some designs.
What are the cons?
Fabric collects dust and needs a vacuum every week or two. Spills need prompt blotting. Pet claws can catch on looped fabrics like bouclé. If someone in the house has a dust allergy, a tight-weave fabric and regular vacuuming matter more than they would with a wooden bed.

How do you tell a well-made upholstered bed?
Press the headboard: it should feel firm under deep padding, with no hollow spots. Look at the panel lines and buttons; they should be straight and evenly pulled. Ask what the frame is made of. Ours are built to order in our own UK workshop on a hardwood frame, with the fabric stretched and buttoned by hand, in styles from wingback to chesterfield button-tufted.
How do you clean an upholstered bed?
Vacuum with a soft brush attachment, working with the pile on velvet. Blot spills straight away with a clean damp cloth; don't rub. For deeper cleaning, test any upholstery cleaner on a hidden patch first. Our fabric guide has care notes for velvet and bouclé.
